ALT 1 - Communication

Communicates clearly and explains reasoning so others can follow how a problem is solved.

AST.1.1 - Language  :  Uses appropriate mathematical language.

AST.1.3 - Transitions  :  Moves between different forms of mathematical representations.

AST.1.4 - Lines of Reason  :  Communicates through lines of reasoning that are complete and coherent.

ALT 2 - Modeling

Reasons mathematically to solve problems in real-life context.

AST 2.1 - Relevant Elements  :  Identifies the relevant elements of the authentic real-life situation.

AST 2.2 - Strategies  :  Selects adequate mathematical strategies to model the authentic real-life situation.

AST 2.3 - Reaches a Solution  :  Applies the selected mathematical strategies to reach a valid solution to the authentic real-life situation.

AST.2.4 - Degree of Accuracy  :  Explains the degree of accuracy of the solution.

AST 2.5 - Making Sense  :  Explains whether the solution makes sense in the context of the authentic real-life situation.

ALT 3 - Patterns

Recognizes patterns and describes them as relationships or general rules.

AST.3.1 - Pattern ID  :  Selects and applies mathematical problem-solving techniques to correctly identify the pattern.

AST.3.2 - Description  :  Pattern is described as relationship or general rule.

AST 3.3 - Verification  :  Verifies the validity of these general rules.

AST.3.4 - Conclusions  :  Conclusions are consistent with the correct findings.

ALT 4 - Ratios Concepts and Reasoning

Uses ratio concepts and ratio reasoning to solve problems.

AST 4.1 - Concept and Description  :  Uses the concepts of ratio and ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

AST 4.2 - Unit Rates  :  Uses the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

AST 4.3 - Applications  :  Uses ratios and rate reasoning to solve real-world and percent mathematical problems.

ALT 5 - Rational Numbers

Computes, applies and extends previous understandings of rational numbers fluently.

AST 5.1 - Division  :  Interprets and computes quotients of fractions, and solves word problems involving division of fractions by fractions by using a visual fraction model and equations to represent the problem.

AST 5.2 - Fluent Division  :  Fluently divides multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.

AST. 5.3 - Decimal Operations  :  Fluently adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

AST 5.4 - GCF and LCD  :  Finds the greatest common factor and least common denominator with whole numbers and uses the distributive property.

AST 5.5 - Signed Numbers  :  Understands that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions and values.

AST 5.6 - Rationals and Numberlines  :  Uses a rational number as a point on the number line.

AST 5.7 - Ordering and Absolute Value  :  Understands ordering and absolute values of rational numbers.

AST 5.8 - Applications  :  Solves real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane, including the use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate and the same second coordinate.

ALT 6 - Algebraic Equations

Applies and reasons algebraically using expressions, one-variable equations and inequalities.

AST 6.1 - Exponents  :  Writes and evaluates numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

AST 6.2 - Algebraic Expressions  :  Writes, reads, and evaluates expressions in which letters stand for numbers.

AST 6.3 - Properties of Operations  :  Applies the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

AST 6.4 - Equivalence  :  Identifies when two expressions are equivalent.

AST 6.5 - Interpret Results  :  Solves equations or inequalities as a process of answering questions.

AST 6.6 - Modeling  :  Uses variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem.

AST 6.7 - One-Step Equations  :  Solves real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form x + p = q and px = q.

AST 6.8 - Inequalities  :  Writes an inequality of the form x > c or x < c to represent a constraint or condition in a real-world or mathematical problem.

AST 6.9 - 2-Variable Relationships  :  Analyzes the relationship between the dependent and independent variables using graphs and tables, and relates these to the equation.

ALT 7 - Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Solves mathematical problems involving area, surface area and volume.

AST 7.1 - Basic Polygons  :  Finds the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes.

AST 7.2 - Volume of Prisms  :  Finds and applies the formulas V = l w h and V = b h to find volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

AST 7.3 - Coordinate-Defined Shapes  :  Draws polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; uses coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

AST 7.4 - Nets  :  Represents three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and uses the nets to find the surface area of these figures.

ALT 8 - Statistics and Probability

Develops understanding of statistical variability, summarizes and describes distributions, and investigates probability.

AST 8.1 - Recognize Statistical Questions  :  Recognizes a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers.

AST 8.2 - Center, Spread, and Shape  :  Understands that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.

AST 8.3 - Measures of Center and Spread  :  Recognizes that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.

AST 8.4 - Visualizing Data  :  Displays numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

AST 8.5 - Interpreting Results  :  Summarizes numerical data sets in relation to their context.

AST 8.7 - Experimental Probability  :  Approximates the probability of a chance event by collecting data, observing its long-run relative frequency, and predicting the approximate relative frequency.

AST 8.6 - Interpreting Probabilities  :  Understands that the probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1 that expresses the likelihood of the event occurring.

AST 8.8 - Probability Models  :  Develops a probability model and uses it to find probability of events.

AST 8.9 - Error Analysis  :  Compares probabilities from a model to observed frequencies; if the agreement is not good, explains possible sources of the discrepancy.

AST 8.10 - Compound Events  :  Finds probabilities of compound events using organized lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulations.

ALT 9 - Proportional Relationships

Analyzes proportional relationships and uses them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

AST 9.1 - Unit Rates  :  Computes unit rate associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

AST 4.2 - Notice Proportionality  :  Recognizes and represents proportional relationships between quantities.

AST 4.3 - Applications  :  Uses proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems.

ALT 10 - Operations with Fractions

Applies and extends previous understandings of operations with fractions.

AST 10.1 - Addition and Subtraction  :  Applies and extends previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

AST 10.2 - Multiplication and Division  :  Applies and extends previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.

AST 10.3 - Applications  :  Solves real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
