ALT 1 - Find Patterns in Nature

I can find patterns in nature and use them to predict future results or understand past events.

AST 1.1   :  I can conduct an investigation to find and communicate the relationship between an independent and dependent variable, a relevant mathematical pattern in the collected data, and a correct prediction an additional data point.

AST 1.4  :  I can represent the patterns: linear, quadratic, and inverse graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 1.5  :  I can make a high school level graph (labeled axis, scale, data points with error bars, applicable best-fit), explain its meaning (pattern and slope), and use the graph to make an accurate prediction

AST 1.6  :  I can identify, compare, and contrast patterns, specifically including the concept of rate of change (slope).

AST 1.7  :  I can communicate the value of finding patterns and explain the reasoning behind making data-informed decisions based on them.

ALT 2 - Patterns in Energy Conservation

Finds and uses patterns in energy conservation and transformation to explain and make predictions about interactions between objects

AST 2.1  :  I can collect data and use it to build an argument for a pattern with energy (kinetic or gravitational).

AST 2.2   :  I can use energy analysis within the engineering cycle to design and optimize a solution to an identified problem.

AST 2.3   :  I can read and use information texts about energy conservation and transformation to answer relevant questions.

AST 2.4   :  I can express the patterns in kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy and conservation of energy graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 2.5  :  I can use conservation of energy to describe and predict energy transfers and transformations in a variety of scenarios graphically, diagrammatically (energy pie charts), in tables, and with words.

ALT 3 - Motion of Objects and Forces

I can find and use patterns in forces to understand and make predictions about the motion of objects and forces they experience.

AST 3.1  :  I can analyze a data set and use computational reasoning to find the patterns in forces and use the patterns to accurately predict a real world situation.

AST 3.3   :  I can read and use information texts about forces to answer relevant questions.

AST 3.4   :  I can express patterns in force interactions mathematically, graphically, in tables, and with words.

AST 3.5  :  I can effectively communicate about everyday situations in terms of the patterns in forces and impulse.

AST 3.6   :  I can use patterns of force to predict the position, velocity, acceleration, net force, and time of an object or event.

ALT 4 - Interactions Between Objects

I can find and use patterns in energy conservation, transfer, and transformation to explain and make predictions about how interactions between objects will affect the objects.

AST 4.1  :  I can conduct an investigation to build an argument for the patterns with energy transfer.

AST 4.3  :  I can read and use information texts about energy conservation, transfer, and transformation to answer relevant questions.

AST 4.4  :  I can express patterns of energy transfer and elastic energy graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 4.5  :  I can use the patterns in conservation of energy and energy transfers in a variety of scenarios graphically, diagrammatically (energy pie charts), in tables, and with words.

AST 4.6  :  I can analyze interactions and graphs to determine the amount of energy transferred (Work).

ALT 5 - Motion of Waves

I can find and use patterns in waves to understand and make predictions about the motion of waves and how the waves will interact with other waves or objects.

AST 5.1  :  I can collect data and use it to build an argument for the patterns with waves.

AST 5.3  :  I can read and use informational texts about waves and sound to answer relevant questions.

AST 5.4  :  I can express the pattern that interrelates wave speed, frequency, and wavelength graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 5.5   :  I can describe how instruments that transmit and detect waves are used to extend human senses (i.e. medical imaging and sonar).

AST 5.6  :  I can use words and diagrams to qualitatively explain resonance and apply this principle to explain how the human ear perceives sound.

AST 5.7  :  I can meaningfully participate in a discussion of how science and technology impact society.

ALT 6 - Light Waves

I can find and use patterns in light to understand and make predictions about how light waves will interact with other light waves or objects.

AST 6.1  :  I can conduct an investigation to build an argument for a pattern with light (examples could be intensity or reflection).

AST 6.3  :  I can read and use information texts about waves and light to answer relevant questions.

AST 6.4  :  I can express the pattern of the intensity of a light source graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 6.5  :  I can use words and diagrams to apply my understanding waves and light to real world phenomenon (examples include doppler effect, 3D glasses, microwaves ovens, x-ray imaging, optical information storage and anti-glare coatings).

AST 6.6  :  I can evaluate and meaningfully participate in a discussion about the validity and reliability of claims about the dangers of different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.

ALT 7 - Electricity and Magnetism

Find and use patterns in electricity and magnetism to understand and make predictions about how electromagnetism behaves and interacts with objects

AST 7.1  :  I can conduct an investigation to build an argument for the interrelatedness of electromagnets and generators.

AST 7.3  :  I can read and use information texts about electricity and magnetism to answer relevant questions.

AST 7.4  :  I can express the pattern for the strength of the interaction between charged objects graphically, mathematically, in data tables, and in words.

AST 7.5  :  I can qualitatively describe how electricity is created and transmitted on societal scale.

AST 7.6  :  I can relate electromagnetism concepts to everyday applications of technology (examples could include electric motors, music instrument pick-ups, solar panels, and anti-lock brakes).

ALT 8 - Problem SolvingUses and communicates a variety of problem solving techniques to make correct predictions about how the world changes

AST 8.1  :  Formulate the question - Based on observations and science principles, I can formulate a question or hypothesis that can be investigated through the collection and analysis of relevant information.

AST 8.2  :  Design the Investigation - I can design and conduct a controlled experiment, field study, or other investigation to make systematic observations about the natural world, including the collection of sufficient and appropriate data.

AST 8.3  :  Collect and Present Data - I can collect, organize, and display sufficient and appropriate data to facilitate scientific analysis and interpretation.

AST 8.4  :  Analyze and Interpret Results - I can summarize and analyze data to draw a valid and supported conclusion to communicate the findings of an investigation, and identify uncertainties.

AST 8.5  :  History of Science - I can Identify examples from the history of science that illustrate modification of scientific knowledge in light of challenges to prevailing explanations.

AST 8.6  :  Knowledge and Technology Progression - I can explain how technological problems and advances create a demand for new scientific knowledge and how new knowledge enables the creation of new technologies.

ALT 9 - Engineering Process

I can explain and apply the engineering process as an iterative and productive means of problem solving.

AST 9.1  :  Identify and Define the Problem - I can describe a problem to be solved through the process of engineering, describe the relevant principles that relate to the problem, and identify appropriate criteria and constraints for a solution.

AST 9.2  :  Generate Possible Solutions - I can evaluate and select an engineering solution from a range of possible options and defend that solution for testing using trade-offs, criteria, and constraints.

AST 9.3  :  Test Solution(s) and Collect Data - I can test solution(s) by collecting, organizing, and displaying data to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of results.

AST 9.4  :  Analyze and Interpret Results - I can summarize and analyze data, evaluate the proposed solution, identify uncertainties, and suggest design improvements.

AST 9.5  :  Impacts of Technology - I can describe how new technologies enable new lines of scientific inquiry and are largely responsible for changes in how people live and work.
